Godfather Sour Cocktail

Godfather Sour
A Godfather Sour is essentially a Godfather cocktail transformed into a sour with the addition of lemon juice, simple syrup, and an egg white.
The standout ingredient is Amaretto — an almond-based liqueur with a sweet praline flavour that works beautifully in winter cocktails, especially Christmas cocktails.
The original Godfather cocktail is iconic in its own right. It was named the Godfather because it was the tipple of choice for Marlon Brando during the filming of the Godfather movies. It’s a simple two-ingredient cocktail: blended Scotch whisky and Amaretto. It must be said, though, this cocktail does not work well with an entry-level Scotch. I tried a mid-range Scotch and it was… not nice. I then tried Johnnie Walker Black Label, and it was a completely different drink — the difference was enormous.
Before you try a Godfather Sour, you might want to make a classic Godfather first [50 ml Scotch, 20 ml Amaretto, shaken and strained over ice] to taste the base.
Like many sour cocktails, this recipe uses egg white for that velvety smooth texture and to balance the contrasting flavours.
*Important note: egg whites are an allergen, and as this is raw egg, the cocktail is not suitable for anyone pregnant, immunocompromised, or with egg allergies.
To make a Godfather Sour, you will need a cocktail shaker, an old-fashioned glass, and some ice.
Godfather Sour Ingredients:
- 30 ml good-quality blended Scotch whisky
- 30 ml Amaretto
- 30 ml fresh lemon juice
- 7.5 ml sugar syrup (2:1 sugar to water)
- 1 egg white
Instructions:
- Add all ingredients to your shaker and dry shake for 10 seconds.
- Add a handful of ice and shake again for another 10 seconds.
- Strain into an old-fashioned glass filled with ice.
- Garnish with a slice of orange; a Rosemary sprig also adds a festive touch
The addition of lemon juice pulls this cocktail away from the typical overly sweet Christmas fare and creates something indulgent yet surprisingly refreshing.
Not just for Christmas, the Godfather Sour is a delightful year round drink, and a prefect digestif.
Salut 🥃
